Title 104th Wellesley's Rifles (Bombay) cross belt plate, hallmarked silver
Nationality British Empire
Period 1904
Sold

This fine silver badge (Birmingham hallmarked and maker marked for 'H&S', presumably Hobson & Sons) was made for an Indian Rifle regiment with a most distinguished pedigree. Raised in 1775, in 1889 it became the 4th Regiment Bombay Infantry, in 1903 becoming the 104th Wellesley's Rifles.

This badge (10.3 cm from crown to base) is missing its securing bolts to the reverse, but is otherwise in fine condition, mounted with a king's crown.

It has all the battle honours you would expect for this regiment, the distinction being that the last battle honour is East Africa 1898, an honour unique to this regiment of the Indian Army.

(In the photo, the backplate looks a little dark, but that is simply the lighting. It is in reality polished silver, as you would expect.)

testimonials

Having received the beautiful medal that has been the subject of many recent phone calls, I am absolutely delighted with it. More importantly, the research you provided into the military backgrounds of all those involved made it all the more poignant. Thank you for your highly professional and friendly help and advice throughout the transaction.
