This is a generic commemorative piece for the first two years of WW1: a platform with three swordsmen over a base of eagles scouring the landscape (for enemies). 'In memoriam eternum' is in relief round the edge, together with the dates in Latin numerals. The triple emblems of Turkey, Austria and Germany are over the central figure. It measures 4.1cm across, is signed by the sculptor (bottom right) and has two Austrian silver hallmarks, as well as being punched with 'Gesetzl. Geschutzt' (patent pending). It was probably made by some high class jewellery outfit for patriotic ladies to wear. Its condition is excellent, with very little wear, merely some superficial sulphur patination. The field of the piece has a rough hewn finish, almost like a hammered finish. This style of design became more widespread during the course of WW1, which, indeed, saw its birth. |
