This fine badge is marked 'R.S.' on the reverse for Rudolf Suval of Vienna. This mark is his old war-time mark, the post-war being distinguished by being in Roman lettering. The qualification for receiving this was for 12 sorties, outstanding leadership or a particularly successful mission. The most famous action was at Slapton Sands on the Devon coast in the run-up to the Normandy invasion (1944), where 700 American soldiers lost their lives in a practice landing operation when surprised by E-boats. These boats were armed with torpedo tubes and 20 mm canon. |
