Title 4th Prussian Dragoon officer's sword, 1889 pattern
Nationality German
Period c 1914
Sold

This is the standard Prussian cavalry officer's sword of the Great War era. The black scabbards were introduced in 1907. The blade is regimentally engraved 'Drag. Rgt. von Bredow (1 Schles.) No.4' (the von Bredow dragoon regiment, 1st Silesian, 4th Prussian line). It is made by WKC, which is stamped on the forte.

The garrison town of this unit was Luben and it was part of the 9th Landwehr Division in 1917/18, when they were serving in France.

The scabbard has the bulk of its original paintwork still intact and the only real fault is some stress marking on the inner guard, where I suspect it has been distorted and an attempt made to beat it back into shape, which if done cold typically results in stress marks on a piece of this age. There is also a small stress crack on the inner side of the guard. There is some wear to the inner plating on the pommel and a slightly pickled look to the inner surface of the guard.

The blade is in excellent shape and has all its original blueing with a few small scratches under the lettering. The image on the reverse is that of a dragoon squadron charging in the field.
