This is the classic Russian helmet plate from the Crimean War, worn on a leather helmet with a flame-shaped spike coming out of a brass cloverleaf mount. The helmet was styled on the Prussian 1848 pattern helmet. It also had a brass peak rail and brass chinscales, just like the Prussian pattern. The slots on each side of the number are evidence of the common Russian practice of placing a small shield with superimposed numbers on top of an existing number to differentiate regiments, eg when a man was wounded and returned to a different combat unit. The condition is excellent for its age: one small crack to the right hand wing of the shield. Now only two loops remain on the reverse of four, soldered in the usual manner. These plates are now becoming a little scarce, as evidence of which they are now deemed worth faking! |
