This sword is a rare variant of the 1796 pattern for the light cavalry, but with echoes of the 1788 pattern, ie no ears on the grip. Furthermore, the loop for the sword knot is placed on the side of the hilt rather than at the top of the guard where you would normally expect to find it. There is some damage - about 3" long - in the form of a split to the top of the scabbard (see photo) and one of the split rings is now broken in half, but both halves are present on the sword. The wooden liners to the scabbard would appear to have rotted, but the blade has much of its original polish and neither the hilt nor the scabbard would appear to have been machine cleaned/polished. Slightly scruffy grip, but the bulk of the leatherwork is intact. |
