ephemera

Contemporary magazines, drill manuals, regimental and unit histories, photos and photograph albums, postcards, drawings and prints, army lists (of officers, principally American, British, French and German). My personal interest here is in Napoleonic era prints and drawings of uniform studies.

militaria item Sepia photo of an Italian mountain battery
- British
This sepia photograph, pasted on a card page torn from a British military album, shows a battery of Italian mountain artillery in front of their barracks - 'Caserma Alfonso La-Marmora' (Rome). They appear to be in tropical kit, as many of them are wearing white foreign service helmets, with saddlery, ammunition boxes and guns in the foreground.

militaria item Sepia photo of a company of Bersaglieri (Italian)
- British
This sepia photograph, pasted on a card page torn from a British military album, shows a company of this famous Italian light infantry unit, complete with their bugle section and officers standing in front of double files of men.

militaria item Sepia photo of Austrian Hussars
- British
This sepia photograph, pasted on a card page torn from a British military album, shows a KuK Hussar regiment on parade. There are officers and trumpeters in front, with the bulk of the regiment in double files behind. The caption in English underneath simply says 'Austrian Hussars'.

militaria item Sepia photo of Sphinx at Gizeh, Egypt, with one other
- British
These two photos, mounted back to back on board, have come out of an old British military album. The officers appear to be cavalry or mounted infantry, could even be Camel Corps personnel - note the presence of sabretaches and sabres. The foreign service helmet with linen neck shade is typical of this era.

militaria item Sepia photo of French garrison artillery
- British
This sepia photograph, pasted on card cut from a page from a British military album, shows a howitzer of the French garrison artillery, together with a group of officers and senior NCOs. The caption in English underneath simply says 'French Artillery'.

militaria item Sepia photo of Black Watch at Malta, on parade with cased colours
- British
This sepia photograph, pasted on card cut from a page from a British military album, shows the 42nd at Malta, whence, according to Hart's Army list of 1879, they disembarked in November 1874. They would appear to be armed with Snider/Enfield conversions, which were the rifles in use during their stint in the 1873-4 Ashantee War.

militaria item Historique du 19e Regiment de Dragons 1793-1913
- French
This superb regimental history has six colour plates, with many black and white illustrations, as well as photographs and prints of commanding officers. It was privately published in 1945 by J.A. Sauzey, the author, and limited to 495 copies, of which 29 examples were a special edition. This is example number 276. There are 316 pages.

militaria item Uniformen der Alten Armee
- German
Complete cigarette card album by Waldorf Astoria, 308 cards in all, full colour illustrations together with Order of Battle on the outbreak of war in 1914, breakdown by army corps/regiment, showing home garrison towns and other details (30 x 28 cm). It shows in good detail and bright colour the uniforms of the pre-war German army.

militaria item The Camp Men by French L. MacLean
- American
The Camp Men - The SS Officers who ran the Nazi Concentraton Camp System by French L. MacLean, published by Schiffer, USA, 1999, hardback, 380 pages (22 x 28.5 cm). It gives details, where known, of service histories and medal awards and is copiously illustrated with all the 'bad guys'!

militaria item By-knife fork for Highland dress dirk
- Scottish
This would have been part of a by-knife set from the scabbard of a Scots dirk. Together with a small knife of matching design, the set would have been mounted on the outer face of the scabbard, normally one above the other. The dirk would have been mounted en-suite with a large citrine as a pommel.
