This is a piece straight from the Raj! The 'I' with a broad arrow stamp dates it as a post-Mutiny piece from the era when the British government acquired control of India from the East India Company on the basis that they had failed to foresee, let alone successfully contain, the Mutiny, which British troops were needed to suppress. It would probably have had a cork seal in the lid and possibly a small dipper within the bottle itself, both of which are now missing. Otherwise it is in superb condition (6.5cm high x 3.5cm diameter) and still has the remains of its leather washer round the base of the screw thread, a little thin now with age, but nonetheless clearly original. Indian ordnance marked tools rarely surface on the open market these days. |
