Title Pioneer pick scabbard
Nationality German
Period c 1905
Price £120.00

This is the penultimate pick scabbard of the German army. The pick, with an axe head one side and a slightly curved beak on the other, was carried by all Pioneer units instead of an entrenching spade. In 1909, a new model appeared with the belt support being doubled and extra strapping provided to secure the bayonet at the soldier's side.

The leather is dark brown with iron fittings and is still in reasonable condition, the whole measuring some 30cm long. According to Stephen Bull's excellent book "World War One German Army", the issue of tools to a company was 100 entrenching tools,10 picks and 5 hatchets. Larger shovels, picks, axes and saws were carried in the first line transport or with supply train units.
Thus it can be seen that this is a rare survivor of Imperial army leather work.
