'R. Ackermann's Costumes of the Indian Army, No. 20'. An extremely rare print of the Bengal European horse artillery from the old Bengal Army, pre-Indian Mutiny period. Nicknamed the Red Men on account of their red horsehair plumed helmets. During the Mutiny, this regiment was the mainstay of immediate resistance to the mutineers, certainly where horse artillery was concerned, covering itself in glory at the Siege of Delhi in particular. The other ranks were almost uniquely of Irish extraction, the officers being British. Damaged in several places and with part of the lower title missing, but with original colours still bright. Some evidence of dirt staining from age. |
