Title Black Watch plaid brooch, hallmarked 1905
Nationality Scottish
Period 1905
Sold

The two main pieces of this are fully hallmarked for the maker, Kirkwood & Sons, Edinburgh. 'GFBL' is scratched on the reverse, almost certainly for Geoffrey Francis Bowes-Lyon (1886-1951, cousin of the late Queen Mother), first commissioned 29/11/05, captain 29/11/14, wounded in WW1, served as adjutant in the 5th Battalion, retired 2/7/21.

These plaid brooches were worn in full dress uniform when the plaid was worn over the shoulder in imitation of the 18th century manner from roughly the time of the Crimea onwards until certainly 1914 and possibly later.

This has seen some service wear, with a few nicks and dings here and there, but overall the condition is superb and the relief features of St Andrew on his cross are nice and sharp. The central figure and the wreath are bolted to the frame of the plaid brooch with small nuts.

Found the item a little on the expensive side and a bit disappointed that you were unwilling to bend a bit on the price of the Officer's Tunic Eagle (half the fun of buying, after all, is the haggling), but impressed by the speed of delivery and the quality of the item. Was well worth it in the long run...
