This has matching numbers to scabbard and hilt and a clean blade marked 'Mre d'Armes de St Etienne 1873'. This was the bayonet for the 1866 model bolt action rifle, the first in the French Army service, which saw extensive use in the Franco-Prussian war and later in France's colonial wars in Indo-China and Africa. The scabbard has some minor surface rust, which has largely been hand cleaned off. There are extensive remains of the original blue finish. |
