This is the second class of the three German sports qualification badges (gold, silver and bronze) of the 1930s, seen worn in many pre-war photos, particularly of SS and armed forces personnel. In 1938 alone, approximately 8,000 silver class badges were awarded, some 87,000 bronze and 1,900 odd gold. The silver grade was introduced in 1920 and awarded to men and women aged between 18 and 32 who passed the physical training tests for a total of eight years or to those between 32 and 40 who passed the tests during a 12-month period. It is a one-piece die-struck badge in brass with a silvered finish, with the maker's mark (Wernstein Jena) in raised relief on the reverse. Most of the silver on the face has been lost. Otherwise the condition is OK. |
