HvK (1854-1924) was the Austro-Hungarian Empire's final, entirely ceremonial, Commander-in-Chief. This plaque commemorates his successful occupation of Serbia, serving under the Prussian General Mackensen, in 1916. HvK served on all fronts, being promoted to Field Marshal in August 1917, after Cernowitz. It is made of pot metal painted with gold and silver and is signed by the artist, K. Schwarz, on the face of the piece. It measures 16cm high. I imagine it was produced as a commemorative piece for his successful occupation of Serbia. Its condition is generally good, but there is some wear to the paintwork, on the highlights of his face in particular and at the base of the shield. |
