This is a rare bayonet (particularly rare because of the rubber hilt) .There are all the government inspection stamps throughout, except on the frog stud, which is somewhat malformed, and the blade is dated 1914 at the forte. This bayonet can be found in three formats: with a leather grip; with a wood grip (usually European issue for machine gun crews); and, as in this example, with a hard rubber grip (typically for issue in the German Pacific islands). This example was made at Erfurt, the Saxon arsenal, and would fit the Gewehr 98. Army air corps units were also issued with these. The only fault with this weapon is some fairly severe rust at the top of the scabbard, which in some places goes right through the metal, and some severe bruising. Otherwise the bayonet is in excellent condition, with a light grey patina to the hilt. The rubber grips are in good shape with minimal signs of age wear. |
