Title Mauser bayonet, model 98/05, A.a., Alex Coppel
Nationality German
Period 1915
Sold

This weapon was developed initially to replace the model 98 pipeback bayonet and, like its earlier model, did not have a steel flashguard on the back of the hilt and, furthermore, had little extension wings on either side of the residual muzzle ring. The later models had a steel flashguard and usually a steel scabbard as well.

It is marked at the forte 'ALEX COPPEL // SOLINGEN' and on the spine there is a Prussian ordnance mark under a crowned W and 15. There are ordnance stamps clearly visible throughout.

There is an old burn/shrapnel bruise on one side of the fruitwood grip and some period repairs to the scabbard seam. Otherwise, the bayonet is in excellent order, with a light patination to the hilt mounts and the bottom scabbard mount. The blade (just short of 37cm) has been professionally sharpened in an exemplary manner. There are minor edge nicks along its length and some minor bruising to the forward part of the pommel.

This is one of the nicest scabbards I have seen on one of these for a long time, the leather having virtually all its original nap.
