This splendid little pressed brass image (under its original domed glass) is signed PWF and is titled Admiral Lord Nelson around the upper edge. It was probably commissioned after Nelson's death at Trafalgar in 1805, though conceivably could have been made earlier. There is a shell and anchor motif under the suspension ring on the frame. The frame measures 10.5 x nearly 12 cm, but the medallion itself is just over 5.5 cm across. The lacquer finish on the frame is slightly crazed and has some minor losses. There is a lengthwise split down one side of the frame extending for a short distance into the top part of the frame. The gilt finish, though clearly visible, is covered by layers of nicotine or some such, typical of the piece having been hung in a room with a tobacco laden atmosphere. |
