Title Officer's Schutzpolizei shako with cover
Nationality German
Period c 1936-39
Sold

This is the standard Schupohelm for urban police and also Ordnungspolizei. Photographs of the first year in Russia show German police units wearing this with the cover on. Normally it was only worn for home service. The owner's name 'Maischak U.' is on a name tape glued onto the rear peak of the cover, which also has 'Res.-Pol./Bremen' stamped on.

The cockade is black velvet with a white silk surround (probably from a Prussian Jager NCO's/officer's shako), rather than black, white and red bullion, the black and white being the Prussian colours. The eagle is a magnificent silver-plated example, a one-piece striking in deep relief, not to be confused with the rather ordinary looking other ranks' eagle.

The lining is in excellent shape, with the odd small tear. There is some moth tracking to the rear skull of the helmet. The third photograph down shows the truest colour of the hat. The cover fabric is green shot through with brown, typical of police summer tunic material.

The iron cross you sent me came on Saturday morning. Very pleased with the medal.

Hanger arrived safe and sound 11.30ish today. Very pleased, it's as expected. Your excellent pics make all the difference in terms of confident buying over the net. As a matter of interest, the frog, which as you said is very a/f, is, as you thought, 'spot on'. On closer inspection it is a mk.1 Naval Frog, designated 'for cutlasses'. Date seems around 1860ish give or take.

By the way, I think your site is very user friendly. Seems to work much better than many and up to date, a rarity!!!
