These were worn in full dress up until 1896, when the 'feldbindung' or officer's dress belt replaced them for all practical purposes, but their use continued for gala occasions. This bullion sash, with a cloth backing and magnificent silver bullion tassels, has a thin red stripe in the centre, used uniquely by Oldenburg and Baden regiments. This is not to be confused with the colonial schaerpen as worn by Schutztruppe officers, which had a thicker red stripe, a good 2mm as opposed to the 1mm here. The condition is extremely fine. Both this and an officer's dress belt and buckle (also on my site) belonged to the same family (Ringe) and there is an original receipt (to be sold with the belt) from J Godet & Sohn, Berlin, for military uniform items, dated 23 June 1917 (addressed to Frau Major Ringe). |
