A typical pair of Thirty Years War heavy cavalry munition gauntlets, worn by both sides, these could also have been worn in the English Civil War. They are the last hurrah of field armour, which comprised breast and back plate, laminated thigh defences, close helmet, shoulder/arm defences and gauntlets. These were professionally re-leathered at the Tower of London some 50 years ago in correct heavy duty buff leather. There may well be some replacement elements in the thumb and finger defences, however, if so, these have been expertly made and aged to match the rest. A 2" inner length of rolled edging is missing from the left hand at the wrist. The interior is finished in black lacquer of some sort. There are striations in the cuff of the left hand and minor service/age damage throughout both pieces. The overall length is 11". As expected, there are no armourer's marks. |
