Title Porcelain beer stein, 9th Wurttemberg Infantry
Nationality German
Period 1906
Sold

This stein is unusual insomuch as it is not Prussian, but rather one of the smaller states, Wurttemberg. It is inscribed round the base: '7.Comp. 9.Wurtt.Inftr.Regt. No.127.Ulm. 1904-06'. 'Gefreiter Kaser' is painted just under the top wreath on either side of the State Wappen (coat of arms). There is a lithophane in the base.

These steins were purchased by or given to the owner on completion of conscript service and subsequent posting to the reserve. There is a good portrait of the regimental colonel (?) in the centre, with an image of Ulm Cathedral on his left. The pewter lid has the State coat of arms above a small portrait of Kaiser Bill to the front, the rear having the Reich coat of arms. As with all original steins of this era there must be some hundred painted details on top of the transfer image. The maker mark 'R.Kahle, Ulm-on-Danube' is painted under the hinge.

The overall condition is excellent, with a small chip/flake at the rim on the interior surface by the hinge. There are also a few small surface flakes on the tunic of the left hand man and on the peak of the pickelhaube of his kneeling fellow.
