Title Porcelain beer stein, Wurttemberg Pioneer Battalion 13
Nationality German
Period 1911
Sold

This is a little unusual, being the pontoon company (no. 4) of the 13th Pioneer Battalion (Wurttemberg) of the German Army. It is dated 1909-11, denoting the two-year conscript service of Pioneer Steeb who had this made as a souvenir by R. Kahle of Ulm-on-Danube (maker mark under hinge of lid). The base has the traditional lithophane.

The 1914 German Army had 23 Pioneer Battalions: Prussia 19; Bavaria 2;Saxony and Wurttemberg one each, excluding railway and balloon units.

These steins were purchased by or given to the owner on completion of conscript service and subsequent posting to the reserve. There is a list of names, partially faded in places, on either side of the grip, denoting all the corporals and privates in his company. The oak leaf wreaths have black/red bands for Wurttemberg, and there are two bridging scenes showing Ulm Cathedral and the unit barracks. Unlike modern copies of this genre, there must be some hundred details picked out in paint on top of the basic transfer image.

There is a little age wear and tear overall, but generally this is in good shape.
