This fine miniature on ivory shows a high-ranking Austrian officer, possibly a sapper, wearing the Commander's cross of the Maria Theresa order (the Austrian VC), along with the Kanonenkreuz (the Army Cross 1813-14, indicating a Napoleonic veteran). One can date the painting from the use of the open collar combined with stock and the extravagant curly coiffure of the subject. It is loosely mounted on a piece of printed card with some old paper tape on the reverse. Because this is an ivory item, it will require a CITES certificate if it is to be exported outside the EU. |
