This model 1896 helmet was issued to an NCO of a Train Battalion of the Imperial Prussian Foot Guards. The Guard Eagle is mounted on the front, the spike unscrews, and the reverse peak is dated 1903, with an issue date of 1904 and the initials 'GT' for Garde Train. The chin chain and distinctive rosettes indicate NCO status. It comes complete with a period cotton cover (one small tear at rear vent, one hole at point). The leather has extensive crackelure to the skull, and the eagle, though of the period, has been replaced (viz two extra holes in skull). There is some distortion to the rear peak. This has a faint stamp 'BAG 1903' for Beckleidungsamt Garde (Guard Clothing Store). There are small losses to the chin chain leather and the leather connecting strap is extremely frail on both sides. On one side the leather surround to a chin chain anchor has suffered, resulting in a loosened anchor point. |
