This was issued to Telegraph troops to enable them to climb telephone poles with a wire cable spool attached to their belt, leaving both hands free for climbing. This pressed steel example replaced the brass buckle in 1915 as a war economy measure. It has a field grey paint finish and is almost identical to one in my own collection which has an anodised zinc finish. One side of the gatepost catch appears to have an old lead solder repair consistent with heavy field use. Apart from this and a little patination to the paintwork, it is in good shape. |
