An excellent example of Gebirgsmutze, in almost ex-stores condition. It retains its good shape on account of being kept on a cap block for a number of years and I have repeated the same storage procedure. The T-shaped cloth badge is typical of earlier practice in applying badges to caps. The type of cloth suggests mid-to-late war construction, also confirmed by the lack of leather sweatband. The later mountain caps, with the exception of t he officers, did not always have sweat bands. From 1942 onwards they always used a certain amount of rayon in the woollen mix, which gives the cloth a characteristic look quite different from earlier all-wool examples. There are no ventilation gromits, again an indication of a later date. The stiffener inside the peak is broken or bent virtually down the middle. This is not apparent from the photographs. |
