Title S84/98 Mauser bayonet, with original buff leather frog
Nationality German
Period 1917
Sold

This is the so-called 'cavalry' bayonet, on account of numerous extant photos showing it in use with the mounted arm. It is marked on one side of the forte 'Gottlieb // Hammesfahr // Solingen-Foche' and on the other 'Bayard', representing a Belgian firm whose stock of unhilted blades was seized in 1914.

There is a Prussian acceptance stamp for 1917 on the spine at the forte. The whole metalwork surface of the hilt and scabbard has been carefully buffed overall, leaving the ordnance stamps intact. Both fruitwood grips are in good shape and the buff leather frog, though a little stiff with age, is still in quite good shape. The stitching to the tongue has given out and the frog slot shows evidence of the same loss. The blade shows some scouring marks at the point and on the spine, but the overall condition is fine, with Prussian stamps and date still visible, if a little worn.
