Title S98 A.a. Mauser bayonet (sawback)
Nationality German
Period 1901
Sold

This bayonet is marked on the quillon and the top of the scabbard throat, '27.R.8.9' for the 27th regiment of the Prussian line. This unit suffered severe casualties on the Somme in 1916 and at this point the bayonet was probably captured by the English. The forte of the blade is marked 'ERFURT' under a crown for the arsenal.

There is a 2.5 cm long split to the top of the grip, a design fault in the first model of this bayonet, which was later modified with twin pairs of slab grips. The blade is in quite good shape, with excellent sharp teeth, and the scabbard seam is still intact. All the exterior ironwork has suffered somewhat and there are extensive oil and age stains to the grip.

The 3 medals have just arrived safely - very interesting. (From your description I was expecting ribbon to be dreadful; personally, I think that the "Russian Front" is beautifully 'aged'.)

I am wholly delighted with the shako plate. [It] is a wee cracker. It is a real pleasure to have something combining both condition and quality in equal parts, and I simply could not be more pleased.
