This buffalo horn flask would have held approximately 2 pounds of gun powder. The pineapple motifs on the bottom mount could suggest an American (or West Indian?) connection, certainly an Atlantic one. Occasionally, these large flasks can be seen in portraits of English gentry in the middle and latter years of the 18th century. There are no hallmarks, but the mounts would appear to be sterling standard. The nozzle has been restored, but the spring, top mount and cut off arrangement are all original to the flask. The nozzle would throw just short of 2 ounces of powder, enough for an officer's fusil, shotgun or blunderbuss. The patina on the horn shows a nice polish half way up from the base and thereafter there is some wear from handling. |
