The Tank Corps was raised in 1917 and this badge was commonly in use until 1939, when a new badge was introduced in white metal, this being in gilding metal. The Tank Corps was the instrument of immediate tactical success on the Western Front, which broke the stalemate of the trenches and was a major contributing factor to the final victory. It is of one-piece die-struck construction, with a brass slider on the reverse brazed to the back of the badge at the base of the crown. There is some minor distortion to the face of the badge. The badge has dulled down to a dull bronze colour, but would originally have had a shiny finish, as a result of being made of gilding metal. |
