Title Uniface fencing club plaque by Szody
Nationality Hungarian
Period c 1910

Award plaque of the Ungaria Uno-Club, a pre-war Hungarian fencing club, with motif of the victor, sabre in hand, being awarded a laurel wreath. This is made of zinc, signed by the artist 'Szody' (with an umlaut over the 'o'), and has the inscription 'BEC SULET A FEGYVERNEK'. Toned and patinated with age and in good, very fine condition.

Further information on the artist Szody (assuming it is Ladislaos Szody) can be found at this website. E Benezit, in the eighth volume of his eight-volume 'Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs et Graveurs' (published 1955), mentions only one Szody: 'SZODY (Szilard Konstantin), sculpteur a Budapest, ne le 27 avril 1878 a Nagykata (Ec. Hong.).' Is it possible that this plaque is by S K Szody, or is he perhaps a brother?

If you want to comment on this item—re quality, age, etc—please email me.

Just a brief note to confirm that the sabre has been delivered today. All is as it should be. I have to say I’m impressed with the ‘custom’ packaging, obviously essential in your line of business. I have made a very quick inspection of the sword & it fully lives up to your accurate description, very pleased with the purchase.

The 3 medals have just arrived safely - very interesting. (From your description I was expecting ribbon to be dreadful; personally, I think that the "Russian Front" is beautifully 'aged'.)
