Title Whitworth bayonet, 1863 model
Nationality British
Period c 1865
Sold

This is a rare bayonet: some 9,000 Whitworth rifles (calibre .451) were issued to the British Army in the 1860s, principally to the Rifle Brigade and Foot Guards, along with a few other line regiments. It is noteworthy that the Whitworth rifle was used extensively by Confederate snipers in the War between the States.

There are government inspector's marks on the hilt and the blade. There is no maker mark. There is the faintest trace of a VR and crown on one side of the forte, but it has largely been cleaned off.

The base of the blade (57.5 cm or nearly 22.75" long) on one side, some 12", has extensive abrasion and sharpening marks. Other than that and a little shrinkage on the grip, the piece is in excellent shape for its, with the leather seam intact. There is some old mild pitting throughout the iron elements of the hilt, most of which has been carefully cleaned off by hand.
