Title 17th Brunswick Hussars Totenkopf, undress cap
Nationality German
Period c 1914
Sold

The other regiments that wore this insignia were the 1st and 2nd Life Guard Hussars of Prussia. Brunswick was the only minor state which had the privilege of wearing it. The regiment wore a similar but larger badge at Waterloo, where they fought with great distinction. It is just under 5 mm. tall.

From the quality, I suspect that this silver plated on brass example is that of an officer for the cloth cap with a black leather peak. The badge was normally placed between the Reichskokarde and the state kokarde. It is a smaller version of the badge worn on the busby. The cap in question had a black top with a red band and three lines of yellow piping at the base, centre and top.

Its condition is OK, with a little wear to the highlights on the crossbones. It still has much of its frosted finish on the skull.
