This is the oldest Irish infantry regiment. It was raised as the Royal Regiment of Ireland in 1695 and served until 1751, when it became the 18th (The Royal Irish) Regiment of Foot. It was disbanded in 1922 on the partition of Ireland. The Home Service helmet was worn on service at home; when they went overseas, they wore the white tropical helmet. This badge is a slightly scruffy example, the gilding being worn on the highlights and the securing pins on the back are missing. Otherwise, it is a reasonable example with all its star points intact. |
