This is an unusual Volunteer Rifle regiment helmet plate with a blackened finish in the format of the standard 1881 pattern helmet star, rather than the more usual Maltese cross normally associated with Rifle units. The 1st VB Essex was based at Romford. The base metal of the piece would appear to be gilding metal. The condition is generally excellent for its age and this is one of the first blackened examples I have come across for a number of years. |
