Title 1st Volunteer Battalion Essex Regiment helmet plate
Nationality British
Period c 1881-1908

This is an unusual Volunteer Rifle regiment helmet plate with a blackened finish in the format of the standard 1881 pattern helmet star, rather than the more usual Maltese cross normally associated with Rifle units. The 1st VB Essex was based at Romford. The base metal of the piece would appear to be gilding metal.

The condition is generally excellent for its age and this is one of the first blackened examples I have come across for a number of years.

If you want to comment on this item—re quality, age, etc—please email me.

Just to let you know that i have received the Sabre today and it looks great and nothing was damaged in transit. It has been a pleasure doing business with you and the descriptions on your web site perfectly match the condition of the item and i look forward to doing business with you in the future.

...acquiring this bayonet has completely changed my way of thinking on collecting bayonets. I have become extremely fond of the bayonet... Thanking you once again for the very professional way in which you handled the money [going to the wrong account] problem.
