This gilt bronze enamelled badge commemorates the fighting at the bridgehead of Usciezko, on the Dniester river in Galicia (Russian Poland). It is probably an officer's badge, or at any rate an NCO's, by virtue of the obvious cost and quality. It is marked on the reverse with the details of the Usciezko bridgehead. Typically these badges were sold to raise money for the widows and orphans of the relevant units and were normally worn on the left-hand side of the Austrian field cap. Sometimes as many as six were worn all together. Its condition is nice, except that the hinge of the pin has come adrift at some stage and been glued back in position. Originally it would have been brazed. |
