The 9th Foot were raised in 1685, but, until 1751, were known by the names of the successive colonels. In 1751, they became the 9th Regiment of Foot until 1782, when the title changed to the 9th (The East Norfolk) Regiment of Foot. Maker marked on the reverse: 'PETER TAIT & Co // E&Ws.' above with 'PATENT // LIMERICK' below. My guess is that this button dates from the Crimean War or slightly later, as many of the earlier other ranks buttons were in pewter (while this is in brass) and in a slightly smaller format to be worn with the old coatee. The size of this button definitely suggests a tunic button - the tunic replaced the coatee in 1855 - and it cannot date any later than 1881, when numbered buttons were replaced by those with county titles. |
