militaria item Musketon bayonet, 1842 model
- French
This is the first model, with a leaf spring in the hilt, for the 1842 model Musketon (a French carbine). It has two nice, clear stamps at the base of the blade (almost certainly French arsenal inspectors' punches), one being a capital 'B' (I think), the other a capital 'G' surmounted by a star, all within a wreath.

militaria item Gras bayonet
- French
This is the bayonet for the 1874 model single shot bolt action rifle which replaced the Chassepot of 1866, in turn rendered obsolete by the arrival of the Kropatsheck tube magazine rifle in 1877 (both the later rifles used an 11mm brass cartridge).

militaria item Lebel bayonet, model 1886
- French
The Lebel rifle was the first modern service rifle to use a nitro cartridge; all the others of the period still operated with black powder. This classic bayonet would have seen action throughout the French Empire at the end of the 19th century and, of course, in WW1.

militaria item Gras bayonet, 1874 model, modified to fit Gewehr 1888
- French
This was initially made for the French Gras rifle in 1880 by L. Deny of Paris and has all the usual French arsenal/inspectors' stamps, as well as matching numbers to hilt and scabbard. The chief interest of this, however, is the modification of the hilt to accept the model 1888 Mauser service rifle.

testimonials

The package arrived today, and the two items are nice. The Mother Cross actually looks a lot better in person than in the pics.
