ephemera

Contemporary magazines, drill manuals, regimental and unit histories, photos and photograph albums, postcards, drawings and prints, army lists (of officers, principally American, British, French and German). My personal interest here is in Napoleonic era prints and drawings of uniform studies.

militaria item KuK paper knife
- Austrian
The hilt incorporates the arms of Hungary and various arms of Austria (introduced 7 November 1915), with the motto 'Indivisibiliter ac inseparabiliter'. On the back is 'Geschutzt' (= patented) Hirschler' and the blade is stamped 'Offizielle Kriegsfursorge' (official war fund) - ie it is an official piece for raising money for the war effort.

militaria item Pair of silver shoe buckles by William Eley
- British
This is a classic pair of Artois-style buckles from the end of the American Wars, but probably pre-dating the French Revolution of 1789. Eley (worked from 1770, died in 1824) of Clerkenwell Green, London, a silversmith, was the king of 18th-century bucklemakers and the inventor of the patent spring clip mechanism.

militaria item Pair of silver-plated court shoe buckles
- English
This is a particularly nice pair of buckles, which typically would have been worn at court or on special occasions. The base is silver-plated bronze with ormolu ornaments (the gilt elements on the frame).

militaria item Miniature silk Imperial Russian flag
- Russian
Probably made as a Red Cross fund raiser in the early years of WW1, this would have been sold on the streets throughout GB, alongside the Belgian and Serbian flags. It is a faithful rendering of the old Czarist flag in miniature, with St George and the dragon on the central shield (for Moscow) and red blobs on the eagle's wings for the provinces.

militaria item Student fencing sash and enamel badge
- German
This silk sash with the little enamel badge, both sporting the Imperial black/white/red colours, epitomises the student duelling world of this era, together with the logo (picked out in silver bullion) 'Rast Ich so rost Ich', loosely: 'Inactive I rust'. In Bavaria the duelling tradition was still active into the 1950s.

militaria item Shoe buckle, silver
- French
This is a silver buckle (62mm across) dating from c 1770 on stylistic grounds. There is a 19th-century French purity stamp (.800) in the shape of a boar's head punch, introduced in 1838 for all silver being sold openly in the marketplace or a shop.

militaria item Eton 4th June 'Boats' hat ribbons & badges
- British
These badges and boater ribbons belonged to Gerald W E Loder, who was at Eton 1875-81. Later Conservative MP for Brighton 1889-1906, he qualified as a barrister at the Inner Temple in 1888. He was a lord commissioner of the Treasury in 1905; JP & Deputy Lt for Sussex, Vice-Chairman of Sussex TA association; Deputy Chairman of Southern Railway Co.

militaria item Pair of miniature six-point dice, marked silver
- European
These good quality dice are certainly of European make and quite possibly German. Each one is exactly 1cm square, while the pair together weighs 14g. Each one is also marked 925. They would appear to be hollow, the body possibly being cast in one piece and the base and the top being sweated in place.

militaria item VK2 (swords) award document, Uffz. Petry
- German
This document (21 x 14.75cm) commemorates the fighting in the new year/spring of 1942 to notify this NCO that he had been awarded the VK2 with swords. It appears to be personally signed by Generaloberst von Kleist, commander of 1st Panzerarmee. It is franked with the headquarters seal for the 1st Panzerarmee.

militaria item Grand Hotel Brighton gilt bronze button
- British
This is a livery button for the hotel in question, probably worn on a doorman's uniform. It is made by Firmin & Sons Ltd - Firmin became a limited company in 1875 and continues in business to this day. From the style of the piece and the quality of the gilding, it bears all the marks of an earlier rather than later production.
