This type of plaid brooch (3 inches diameter), ie not in hallmarked silver, was normally worn by pipers and senior NCOs in the Scottish highland regiments. The quality for a base metal piece is surprisingly good, hence the relatively early date. I have had these from the 1930s and the quality falls away dramatically by comparison. It would appear to be made of gun metal. The function of the plaid brooch was to secure the plaid in place and was usually positioned on the top left hand shoulder of the wearer. |
