The rifle was a German inspired design from the end of the 19th century, and was carried in both world wars by Japanese troops. The design of the hilt is the original version. Later, in WW2, they did away with the quillon and simplified the hilt, the final versions having a bamboo scabbard. There is a Kokura arsenal mark at the base of the blade. There is a serial number on the pommel, together with a couple of other small marks. This has virtually all the original blueing on hilt and scabbard. There is minor bruising to the obverse of the grip and a few old rust spots and a couple of bruises to the scabbard. The blade is in magnificent shape, with virtually all its factory polish, and has not been sharpened. |
