It is hard to determine the date of manufacture, which could be anywhere between 1897 and the early 1940s. These weapons were carried during the Russo-Japanese war of 1904 and then in the occupation of Manchuria in the 1930s and the subsequent expansion into China, followed by extensive use in WW2. This is a Nagoya arsenal marked example. The scabbard is a pleasant plum brown with hints of original blue finish, as are the metal elements of the hilt. The blade is in polished condition, professionally sharpened down to 7.5" from the point. There is some slight bruising damage to the woodwork of both grip plates, but, generally speaking, this is a good example of its type. |
