This nice example of the 2nd pattern has some evidence of the frosted finish to the reverse. The criteria for the award was to have been awarded the 1st Class Iron Cross again in WW2 and would have been worn on the tunic above the 1914 1st Class Cross. There are silver test fire marks on the edge of one wing. The general condition, however, is excellent, with all the details still in sharp relief. As usual, this has not got a maker mark, which is rarely found with the L11 stamp. The case is the classic for this award and the hinge, though it appears to be brass, is actually only brass finish with an iron core. I have checked this with a magnet. The press stud at the front of the case is brass and the interior satin lining has a kapok filling. |
