This bayonet is the classic French sidearm used in the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-71. It was the first breech-loading rifle carried by the French army, a basic bolt action with no magazine. This was made at St Etienne, a French arsenal (see back of blade for details). The rear quillan or barrel slot has been bent some 15 degrees out of true - through combat? - or just general abuse. Otherwise, this bayonet is in fine condition. |
