This is the type carried by plains clothes constables in the early 19th century and is just over 5.5 inches long. The base unscrews for the insertion of a warrant. The tipstaff was the badge of office of the early police and was used to touch the right shoulder to effect an arrest. Later in the century, it was replaced by the warrant card. The condition is magnificent: it would appear to have all its original lacquer finish which gives it the look of a gilt bronze piece. |
