This was the new production bayonet for the 1874 version of the Chassepot, which was transformed with a new bolt to fire a metallic cartridge, the old one being of paper with a brass base (a bit like the British Snider ammunition). It is a Chatellerault piece, named and dated 1875 on the spine of the blade. Its overall condition is good, with a few minor dents to the sheath and mismatching numbers to hilt/scabbard. It has been carefully hand cleaned, leaving an overall pattern of minor surface corrosion and traces of old varnish extant, especially where the hilt and scabbard are concerned. The blade is in good shape, with a liitle abrasion at the point, perhaps from field service sharpening. |
