This rare survivor from the original raising of the Corps (in 1872) would originally have had a blue-grey superfine wool body with bright silver lace. This is, in all probability, an officer's shako or perhaps a senior NCO's. The other ranks would have, almost certainly, just had a plain black patent leather strap running round the base. Sadly, this example has faded and tarnished with age and the lining sweat band is missing, while the lining itself has split. I have never had one of these in my hands before. |
