The Gebirgsjaeger (mountain troops) were recruited mainly in Bavaria and Austria, both these countries having a strong, first-rate mountaineering tradition. They served with great distinction in Norway, Crete and Russia. The classic mountain troop insignia, worn on the right shoulder of the field blouse, uniform tunic and greatcoat by all qualified members of army mountain troop units. The edelweis was also worn on the left side of the mountain cap. The field is felted wool with the design in rayon (artificial silk, made from wood pulp). The condition is exellent - ex-stores, with no indication that this has ever been worn. |
