This is the conversion of the short 1871 Mauser bayonet, which was then deployed on the model 84 Mauser rifle with tube magazine, and finally modified between 1900 and 1905 for use on the Mauser 98 rifle. It is regimentally marked for the 16th regiment, the 7th company, weapon number 150. The scabbard, though of the correct type, has mismatching regimental marks. The blade is dated W under crown and 88. It is made by Alex. Coppel of Solingen. The scabbard has some shrinkage to the seam, which miraculously appears to be still intact, but the blade is visible within the last inch or so. The woodwork has suffered somewhat on the hilt, but these are certainly the original grips. |
