This is the second model of the long G98 bayonet, the first one having a single-piece wrap-round wooden grip. This was the classic bayonet of the beginning of the Great War, carried by most German infantry regiments. The length of the blade matches its French counterpart exactly, the rifles being of a similar length as well. This particular example has been sharpened for field service and is clearly stamped 14 (for 1914) at the base of the blade. It is made by Simson & Co of Suhl. There is a pleasing mid-brown patination to the iron elements of the hilt. There is some minor bruising to the back of the bayonet locking slot and there is no scabbard. |
